The paper “Uncertainty Propagation in Power System Dynamics with the Method of Moments”  by D. A. Maldonado, Michel Schanen, and Mihai Anitescu was selected as a “Best of the Best” conference paper at the 2018 IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) General Meeting.

Two best paper review stages were involved in this award. In the first review, 66 papers were selected from more than 1,300 papers submitted to the conference. The paper by Maldonado et al. received a Best Paper Award in this stage (see the article on the Argonne website https://www.anl.gov/mcs/article/researchers-win-best-paper-award-at-power-and-energy-meeting). In the second stage, the 66 papers were presented in four sessions at the PES meeting, and judges selected one paper from each session as the “Best of the Best” conference papers.

“Our paper was the best in the technical session on Analytical Methods for Power Systems and only 1 out of the 4 out of 1,300 original submissions,” said Anitescu, a senior computational mathematician in Argonne’s Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS) division.

The award-winning paper was presented by Maldonado, who is a postdoctoral associate in the MCS division. He and the other presenting authors were recognized at the General Meeting Poster Session, and the winning four papers were announced at the General Meeting Awards Dinner.

“I am delighted to accept this award from the PES Society,” Maldonado said. “Our work at Argonne is making great inroads in establishing a rigorous mathematical approach to the problem of uncertainty in dynamic simulations of electrical power systems.”
