I wanted to share here some video animations created by our team with data very similar to the one in the SciVis contest. I hope this provides some inspiration for potential participants.

The first video is about the Outer Rim simulation and here is its official description:

“Anticipating the completion of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) in 2021 in Chile, Argonne scientists have created one of the largest simulations ever produced, the Outer Rim simulation.

As it follows the evolution of matter distribution in the universe and the influence of dark energy, the Outer Rim simulation helps researchers make predictions on what they should expect to see when pointing a next generation telescope like the LSST in its direction. Argonne is helping to develop advanced supercomputing and data analysis tools in support of the LSST.”

The scientist in the video is Katrin Heitmann. She will be one of the judges for the SciVis Contest 2019.

Another interesting animation is “Flying Through the SPHEREx Sky” created by Joe Insley. Joe used ParaView for this one and here is its description:

“SPHEREx is a proposed NASA Medium Explorer
(MIDEX) mission. It is an all-sky spectral survey
which will observe the entire sky multiple times
during its planned two-year mission, producing a
near-infrared spectrum with a pixel resolution of
6 arcseconds. The instrument has three main
science goals: probing inflation via the study of
large-scale cosmological structure, survey the
Galactic plane for water and other biogenic ices,
and to constrain the history of galaxy formation.

This lightcone visualization is a flythrough of a
small part of the SPHEREx sky (the angular size
of the lightcone is 130 square degrees and the
redshift depth is z=1.4). The synthetic catalog
was generated using a halo occupation distribution
method that takes into account the different types
of galaxies seen by SPHEREx (the mock galaxies
in the visualization are HST CANDELS images) and
is based on the trillion-particle “Outer Rim”
simulation carried out with the HACC code on Mira
at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility.”

Joe is also one of the judges for this year’s contest.
