The paper “The Role of Distributed Energy Resources in Distribution System Restoration,” by Noah Rhodes and Line Roald, was named “best paper” in the electrical energy track at the 2022 Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSSS).

Roald is an assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering (ECE) at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and Rhodes is an ECE graduate student. Roald is also a principal investigator in the MACSER project and have had several papers on electrical power systems research published in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

In the award-winning HICSS paper the researchers discuss the role of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as rooftop solar devices, in restoring the power grid after a disaster. The key question investigated was “What parts of the grid should be restored first?” Using a scenario where a windstorm has significantly damaged a distribution feeder, the researchers studied how not only the presence of DERs but also the clustering of DERs can impact the time taken to reconnect to a substation. Their results can help prioritize how customers can best be served after such a devastating event.

The paper was presented virtually at the HICSS conference, which is one of the longest running scientific conference in information technology management. The conference provides an interactive working environment for scholars from academia and industry worldwide to exchange ideas in the information, computer, and system sciences.
